Mo Salah shows his priorities with telling insight immediately after Liverpool win
Mohamed Salah took Liverpool supporters behind the scenes at Anfield after he combined brilliantly with Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo in the victory over Bayer Leverkusen
by Felix Keith · The MirrorLiverpool thrash Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night, but within minutes of the final whistle, Mohamed Salah was already focusing on Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.
The Reds picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season on Tuesday night by running out 4-0 winners against Xabi Alonso’s side. Leverkusen had frustrated the home side for an hour before the flood gates opened, with Luis Diaz netting a hat-trick at Anfield.
Cody Gakpo got the other goal, but there were still two assists for Salah, who combined brilliantly with his fellow attackers. Salah has racked up nine goals and nine assists in 16 matches this season under Arne Slot, who has now won 14 of his 16 matches as Liverpool manager.
It was a brilliant night for Liverpool, who sit top of the Champions League table with a perfect record. But while they were in a celebratory mood at Anfield, Salah and his team-mates were already looking ahead to the tough test against Villa on Saturday night.
Late on Tuesday night, Salah posted a picture of himself climbing into a plunge pool alongside Gakpo and Diaz, all with wide grins on their faces. The message to fans was clear: recover well and we’ll go again this weekend.
Slot sounded a similar message to supporters in his post-match press conference, saying: “Saturday [against Brighton] was impressive atmosphere, tonight was even more impressive.”
The outstanding performances of Salah are particularly interesting for Liverpool fans because they know this could be his final season at the club. The Egyptian’s contract is set to expire in June and, like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold, he has not yet been offered fresh terms.
Salah is paid £350,000 per week – by far the most of any player in the squad – and that makes Liverpool’s decision more difficult, as does his age of 32. Nevertheless, Slot has been very clear on his opinion of the star forward, who has 220 goals and 98 assists in 365 appearances.
“The only thing that I think about is that he’s so important for us, scores important goals, works hard for the team and I’m hoping that he can enjoy that feeling [scoring at Anfield] many, many many more times,” he said before the Leverkusen game.
"Especially if I’m here. But even if I’m not here I’m still hoping for him that he can do this many more times. He’s been incredible for Liverpool for the past six, seven eight years – I don’t know exactly how long he’s been here – and he’s been incredible for us this season. I hope he can continue doing this for the rest of the season and maybe longer to come. But that’s something up to him and the club to find the idea about the future.”
