Casemiro screams head off at Alejandro Garnacho as Man Utd star gets tough treatment
Manchester United supporters were loving Casemiro's reaction after Alejandro Garnacho lost the ball during the Red Devils' 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Old Trafford at the weekend
by Harry Brent · The MirrorAn absolutely irate Casemiro was spotted screeching at Alejandro Garnacho after the Manchester United winger made a mistake against Chelsea.
The Red Devils extended their unbeaten home run against the Blues – one that stretches back to 2013 – with a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday. Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead from the penalty spot on 70 minutes before Moises Caicedo equalised with a low volley from outside the box just four minutes later.
In truth, it was something of a drab affair, with both teams looking a little incohesive, particularly in attacking areas. Case in point: a moment in the second half where Garnacho had Chelsea's defence on the backfoot, but ended up conceding possession sloppily, forcing Casemiro to take drastic action.
The Argentinian, 20, picked the ball up on the edge of the area, but after trying unsuccessfully to evade Caicedo, he turned away from goal, ignoring pleas for a pass from several of his team-mates. To make matters worse, he was then dispossessed by Pedro Neto, who immediately launched a brisk Chelsea counter-attack.
Casemiro, 32, rushed over to intercept the pacey Portugal star, but ended up bringing him down illegally, earning himself a yellow card. Enraged by his colleague's error, the veteran Brazilian turned to Garnacho and started screaming at him.
A clip of the incident did the rounds on social media after the game, with United fans lavishing Casemiro with praise for his "captain-like" response. "Absolutely class that from Casemiro," one person wrote on X.
Another said: "Casemiro is captain material. He was right to tell Garnacho off. Garnacho should not be starting," while a third added: "Love this from Casemiro, and what an awful response from Garnacho. His body language is all wrong."
Later in the day, United legend Gary Neville called Garnacho and Marcus Rashford out for their "disappointing" work ethic during the game. "When I watch [Bukayo] Saka and [Leandro] Trossard and [Gabriel] Martinelli [playing for Arsenal], and when I watch Bernardo Silva and [Phil] Foden for Man City, or I watch players at Liverpool, I watch them all scurrying back, harassing back and doubling up with real intent," he said on The Gary Neville Podcast.
"But I've watched [Malo] Gusto run forward on that far side... we couldn't believe how much space he got [in the game against Chelsea]. The first ethic is that you have to work hard. I'm not saying that Garnacho and Rashford do not work hard, but they can work harder. I know that. That's in their defensive work – which then, I think, gives you the reward in your attacking play.
"I played with the likes of Andrei Kanchelskis, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs on the other side for most of the time that I was at United," Neville continued. "And the work that they put in off the ball meant that the rewards came for the team on the ball.
"They have no idea how to press. I think they need coaching again, almost as if they need to restart and be coached again, this group of players, because they don't look like they've ever met each other. It's really disappointing. Player after player has come to United for 10 years - and managers - and they've been unable to unlock the door that is just a level of performance."
The result leaves United 13th in the table with just over a quarter of the Premier League season gone. Chelsea, meanwhile, are fourth in the table after leapfrogging Arsenal, who lost to Newcastle on Saturday.
United interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy has two games left in charge – a Europa League tie against PAOK on Thursday at Old Trafford and a Premier League visit from Leicester on Sunday, before he hands over the reins to Ruben Amorim, who was confirmed as Erik ten Hag's replacement last week.
The Sporting CP head coach will officially join the club on November 11, with his first game in charge coming against Ipswich Town at Portman Road on November 24, after the international break.
