Pep Guardiola's real dream job after Man City exit emerges amid next England boss links

Pep Guardiola has always harboured an ambition to manage one particular international side - and he could be interested in the job after he leaves Manchester City

Those harbouring hopes that Pep Guardiola might take the reins as England's next manager are set for disappointment, with the Manchester City boss having always had his eye on taking another top job.

The idea of Guardiola ever leading the Three Lions is simply fanciful, with the key reason being that he has long harboured an ambition to manage Brazil, feeling that the world's most iconic international team deserves the most iconic manager.

Currently, Dorival Junior holds the prestigious position, having been appointed at the start of 2024 after interim boss Fernando Diniz was dismissed. Diniz had taken over when Tite was sacked following Brazil's exit to Croatia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

If Brazil fail to win the next World Cup in 2026, hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, Dorival could face the same fate such are the high standards Brazil sets for itself.

The Selecao are currently struggling to hold onto one of the six qualification spots though, with four defeats from their nine qualifying matches leaving them fourth in the South American table.

By the time the next World Cup rolls around, Guardiola could be ready to step in if Brazil need a new manager, having presumably left Manchester City by then. After a much-needed break from the game, he'll be refreshed and looking for a new challenge.

It seems like the perfect match then. While Guardiola still enjoys daily interaction with players on the training ground and the constant demands of games, he would make an exception if the Brazilian FA came knocking.

He's been at the helm of some of football's most prestigious clubs and has a trophy cabinet to match. However, securing the World Cup with Brazil would be an unparalleled achievement - solidifying his status as the greatest manager in history.

When asked if this was his final season at City on Italian chat show Che Tempo Che Fa on Sunday, Guardiola said: "That’s not true, in the sense that I have to think about it."

When pressed further on the England job he added: "‘No, that’s not true. If I had decided something I would say so. Anything is possible."
