Bill Belichick verdict on New York Jets speaks volumes after head coach fired

The New York Jets have fired head coach Robert Saleh after just five games of the NFL season, with Bill Belichick having previously praised the team's roster

Bill Belichick has already expressed his belief that the New York Jets have the potential to be Super Bowl contenders this season.

He praised their roster earlier this season, sparking speculation among fans that he might replace Robert Saleh following his surprising dismissal.

The Jets let go of Saleh on Tuesday after a defeat to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. The decision is intriguing given the team's 2-3 start to the season and their ongoing playoff ambitions.

The Jets have retained both coordinators, Nathaniel Hackett as OC and Jeff Ulbrich as DC - with Ulbrich set to act as interim head coach until a replacement is found. It's still uncertain whether Belichick will return to coaching this season, as he seems to be enjoying his time in the media and his new relationship.

Some reports suggest he may only return to the sidelines in 2025. However, a return to New York could be an enticing offer if it comes his way - especially as some have tipped the team as favourites to win the AFC East.

Belichick has publicly stated his admiration for the Jets' roster. Earlier this offseason, he said: "The Jets are one of the hardest teams to prepare for from a skill standpoint because of Breece Hall. Outstanding running back that has the ability to take the ball the distance. He's very good in the passing game.

"Defensively you want to do everything you can to get the ball out of his hands and load the box. The problem is, if you load the box you're singled out there on Wilson, and that's a tall order. Aaron (Rodgers) knows how to use them and Aaron will know where the defense is heavy and where they're light and be able to work the ball there.

"They just need to solidify the consistency of the offensive line, but on paper I think they have a good offense, and they're hard to defend with a good quarterback, a great wide receiver and a great running back."
