Alan Shearer makes Liverpool title prediction and issues warning to Arne Slot

Liverpool's impressive start to the season means they lead the Premier League table going into the international break, with Alan Shearer believing they can go all the way if they keep players fit

Alan Shearer believes Liverpool can “certainly” win the Premier League under Arne Slot this season - but warned that they must avoid key injuries.

Slot has enjoyed a fast start at Liverpool since taking over from legendary manager Jurgen Klopp in the summer. The Reds have been somewhat of a surprise package, currently leading the league table after seven matches and sitting one point ahead of Manchester City and Arsenal.

Liverpool’s impressive form under the Dutchman has also extended to the Champions League, where they have won both of their matches. Few had expected such a seamless transition following Klopp’s departure after almost a decade in charge, but the Reds once more showed their grit on Saturday by grinding out a 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace.

The three points came at a cost, however, as goalkeeper Alisson Becker limped off the pitch in the second half and is set to be out for some time. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister was also substituted during half time at Selhurst Park due to a groin problem, with the Argentine asking to be taken off.

Pundit Shearer believes injuries to key players like Alisson and Mac Allister are the only thing standing in the way of Slot mounting a serious title challenge this season. Asked whether Liverpool can win the league on Match of the Day, the former Premier League champion said: “They certainly can, absolutely.

"If they can steer clear of injuries, you’ve seen a couple that they’ve had today. But I think we’ve seen enough already in the first few games to say that they’ll be strong. It’s been a really good start."

Micah Richards added: “Against Chelsea and Arsenal next, that’s when we can judge them. But they look good in a different way to Klopp. Slower build-up but they’re doing well.”

Liverpool next host Chelsea on Sunday 20 October following the international break, in what will be the biggest test they have faced this season. A week later, they take on title rivals Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Reds are no strangers to dealing with injuries, having had their squad decimated in the second half of last season. They still managed to enjoy a period at the top of the table in spite of that, relying on their impressive depth and array of young talent.

Alisson’s replacement at Palace was Vitezslav Jaros, who was called into action for his senior debut for the Reds. Their usual back-up goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, wasn’t in the matchday squad after reporting ill.
