Newsboy's horse racing selections for Thursday's four meetings, including Newmarket Nap

Newsboy believes his Nap, Al Nayyir, has the class to win the Jockey Club Rose Stakes (3.55) at Newmarket and he also expects Mr Monaco to return to the winner's circle at Pontefract in the 3.10

AL NAYYIR sets the standard the others have to aim for in the Listed Jockey Club Rose Bowl Stakes (3.55) at Newmarket today.
Tom Clover gave the well-travelled six-year-old his stable debut in the Group 2 Lonsdale Cup at York last month.

Punters allowed Al Nayyir to go off at 33-1 for what looked a tall order, but Al Nayyir came so close to pulling off a surprise.

Ridden by Luke Morris - Kieran Shoemark is on board today - Al Nayyir flew home to get within a short head of winner Vauban.

That effort couldn’t be described as a flash in the pan, either - my selection has plenty of form at a high level - and he gets the Nap vote to score for the first time at his sixth attempt of 2024.

At Pontefract, MR MONACO has plenty going for him in the Simon Scrope Dalby Screw-Driver Handicap (3.10).

Having scored over this afternoon’s 10-furlong trip at Sandown Park in August, Ralph Beckett’s three-year-old stepped up to a mile and a half for a fine fourth to Shadow Dancer at York’s Ebor fixture.

He’s just 1lb higher here, and Hector Crouch’s partner, who still has more to offer on the ninth outing of his life, should get back to winning ways.
