Thomas Tuchel is in advanced talks about becoming the next England manager.

Former Chelsea boss Tuchel was sounded out over the role as part of the Football Association’s search for a successor and is now in pole position. Tuchel is believed to be keen and talks have now accelerated quickly and, while a deal has not been formalised, firm negotiations are expected to take place.

It would obviously mean a German taking charge of the English national team and, while that will raise eyebrows, he is a familiar and popular figure from his time at Chelsea. Tuchel also has an outstanding CV from winning the Champions League and impressed while navigating difficult times at Chelsea with the ownership issue.

Ex-Borussia Dortmund manager has been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich last summer but is highly regarded with working with top players and that also appeals.

Football Association chiefs have spoken to various candidates and sounded out Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.

But there was a feeling that Guardiola - who was sounded out in the sunnier - would most likely to stay for another year at the Etihad when his contract expires this summer. Tuchel has always been a leading candidate and there has been strong interest from Manchester United.

But now it would appear things are moving quickly with Tuchel and the FA. It would not be the first overseas boss as Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello have taken the reigns in the past.

Interim boss Lee Carsley spelt out that the Football Association wanted a “world class manager” who could win trophies. Tuchel clearly fits that bill and, while it is not a done deal, there is a growing belief that the FA may have their man.

Interim boss Carsley has been expected to stay in charge for the remaining Nations League games next month. But the World Cup draw is on December 13 and the new boss will be expected to take over for qualifying fixtures.

That now could well be Tuchel who also has an advantage of working with England captain Harry Kane from their time at Bayern. Tuchel has remained on the Bayern payroll after leaving his position at the end of the season, effectively meaning he has been on gardening leave.

It is not clear whether or not that would mean the FA or Tuchel himself would have to negotiate his release with Bayern.
