Alejandro Garnacho says Manchester United must improve to “make our fans proud”.

United are languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and have made their worst start to a season since 1986 when Ron Atkinson was sacked in November to make way for Sir Alex Ferguson. They are also struggling for goals and have managed just nine in their 10 league games, their lowest tally at this stage of a campaign since 1973 when they were relegated from the top flight.

New boss Ruben Amorim faces a huge task to turn United around when he officially takes over from caretaker Ruud van Nistelrooy on Monday. Garnacho knows United must do better as a team and says their No.1 goal should be to make their supporters happy.

“Of course, it’s a bit difficult at this moment, but the most important thing is to keep going,” he told the United Review. “The season has only just started and we need to try and improve as a team to win every game and make our fans proud.

“Hopefully we will improve over the next few months to have a great season and to win a trophy.” Garnacho, 20, has been one of United’s few impressive players this season and he already has six goals and four assists.

The Argentina star feels he could easily have more and was denied of what could have been the winning goal at Brighton by VAR. “Yeah, I’ve scored, but I’ve also had bad luck too,” he said.

“At the Brighton game, VAR. Then in two consecutive games, hitting the post. In football, sometimes there are good moments and other times, nothing comes off. But we must continue forwards, get back up again and keep working to get better results.”

Garnacho knows about the special history of wingers at United and wants to be remembered as a legend, like George Best, Steve Coppell and Ryan Giggs. “It’s amazing to be part of that and I want to do something similar,” he said.

“They’re legends and have done amazing things in their careers. I want to be a legend at this club and to improve week on week to be an important figure here.” Garnacho is a huge fan favourite because he excites them so much and he says he is humbled to see supporters wearing his shirt.

“The truth is I feel really connected to the fans,” he said. “They always support us, win or lose. I have lots of admiration for how our fans are. It always fills me with pride when I see people with my name on their shirt, so I keep giving the best I can for the club.

“When we attack or have a chance, the fans shout and encourage us and that motivates you to continue and try to score. Our fans are amazing.”
