Mikel Arteta creates new word he uses on Arsenal players and has ‘basics’ rule

Mikel Arteta has used a variety of different methods to try and inspire his Arsenal players since taking over as manager - including one very unusual word

Mikel Arteta is known for his unique approach to inspiring his team - and since taking over at the Emirates Stadium, he's introduced a range of unusual methods.

He purchased a dog (which he aptly named 'Win') to lift spirits, set up an unlit Premier League trophy-shaped light at the training ground - only to be illuminated if and when Arsenal secure the title - and even employed a group of professional pickpockets to swipe his players' belongings to emphasise the importance of readiness and alertness, the Express reports.

Perhaps the most peculiar of all is his invention of a new term: 'collaboretition', a blend of collaboration and competition. The Athletic reports that Arteta frequently uses this term, including during training sessions and team talks.

Kevin Balvers, Arsenal's former head of methodology, shared that Arteta had consulted educational experts to comprehend the science behind optimal learning. "We had people from different clubs and different sports coming over to speak to the coaches, which is how we picked up things," Balvers said.

"For presentations, we had an American come and share techniques which teachers use at university to bring across the message, how to get information into them and how to get information out of them. In tactical meetings, I learned from studies that if you put a dark blue background the players will learn the information more than white, black or red as the contrast is better.

"When speaking about defending, we made sure the text and areas highlighted were red and when attacking it was blue. This helps their brains know instantly what phase of play we're talking about."

The club's creative strategies extend to attracting new talent as well. In efforts to woo Jurrien Timber, Arsenal included edited images of him in the team's kit and personal touches like family photos to emphasise the club's welcoming environment.

They even tailored presentations to player interests, playing music favoured by Timber and for dog lover Kai Havertz, they showcased pictures of Win the dog.

These techniques seem to be paying off, with Arsenal securing key signings such as Declan Rice and Riccardo Calafiori, positioning themselves as consistent contenders for the Premier League title.

Yet, the upcoming domestic challenge is formidable with Manchester City already clear at the top and hosting Arteta's men this weekend. Last season saw Arsenal break a losing streak against Pep Guardiola's side, but their track record at the Etihad remains daunting, with only one win there since the days of Arsene Wenger.

Currently sitting second in the league, just two points adrift from City, Arsenal face a critical test against the current leaders who boast a flawless record so far.
