Xabi Alonso responds to Jamie Carragher 'lies' accusation after Harry Kane claim
Xabi Alonso caught up with former Liverpool team-mate Jamie Carragher ahead of Bayer Leverkusen's 4-0 defeat at Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday night
by Nathan Ridley · The MirrorFormer Liverpool star Xabi Alonso has defended Jamie Carragher after his ex-team-mate was jokingly accused of telling 'lies'.
Alonso and Carragher reunited via video link ahead of Liverpool's resounding 4-0 win at home to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League. Leverkusen manager Alonso spent all five of his seasons at Liverpool playing alongside Carragher, who was on punditry duty for CBS Sports on Tuesday.
Before Alonso's side suffered a chastening defeat, presenter Kate Scott made a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that her colleague 'lies' about how close he is with various big names in football, such as England captain Harry Kane. "Our experience of Jamie on this show is that there are times when Jamie lies on this show," Scott told Alonso during his pre-match interview.
With Carragher chuckling in the background, Alonso replied: "No! Not that much, I can't believe it!"
Scott then followed-up by saying: "So an example is Harry Kane, [Carragher] said he has texted Harry and he has come on this show and said that is not true. There are also times when he has said he has texted you. Is that true? Does he have your number? Are you friends?"
"Carra? Yeah, for sure," Alonso confirmed. "We text, we have always texted, even when I left Liverpool. He forgave me pretty soon. So we have always been in contact."
Carragher then chimed in by saying: "We were texting this morning! We had a little text this morning. Xabi was in Liverpool, he was going for a run. I had my spies out watching him, keeping an eye on him making sure he was okay. How did the run go, Xabi?"
"Pretty good, pretty good," Alonso said. "It was good to see my old house, the old street, the old coffees [shops] where I used to go. I know that you are the boss in the city so I couldn't get out of [away from] you!"

The Leverkusen boss was in less of a cheery mood after the match, as Liverpool scored four unanswered second-half goals and Luis Diaz grabbed a hat-trick. "It is painful, the result more than the performance probably, but this is the Champions League. This is the highest level. It wasn't enough for us," Alonso admitted to Amazon Prime Video Sport.
"It can happen at Anfield that you lose and for sure to lose 4-0 it is not nice. It is hard because at 2-0 we were trying to fight for the one ball that would give us hope. But Liverpool with spaces, they are a top team for that and we were punished for the last two goals."
