Man United Luke Shaw transfer replacements after injury setback with three-month no-brainer

by · Manchester Evening News

Luke Shaw's injury hell continues for Manchester United. It is already over seven months since his last Premier League appearance, and he is now closing in on an entire year since he last played back-to-back full matches for the club.

Unfortunately for Shaw, who has been out with injury for large periods in two of the last three seasons now, it continues a negative trend. Despite debuting for Southampton as a teenager in 2012, he is yet to play over 2,000 league minutes in consecutive years.

After signing Shaw to effectively replace Patrice Evra at Old Trafford, United's plans to find a backup a decade on have so far faltered. Tyrell Malacia has been unable to get to fitness himself after an exciting 2022/23 campaign, and it has been the role of Diogo Dalot to act as cover in the absence of others.

Given that Shaw being available is now the exception rather than the rule (and has been heading that way for some time), it is only understandable that the club are being linked with new players in the position. It is one reason why Under-18 starlet Harry Amass is attracting so much attention.

The natural left-back was taken on pre-season with Erik ten Hag over the summer and has been expected to make the transition into a fully-fledged first-team option. His chances have been extremely limited, though, with no place on the senior bench yet. Given nobody can be brought in until the winter window, he may well get more chances in the coming weeks.

Instead of Amass, though, reports over the summer and into the opening month of this season have put United in the mix to sign several left-sided options. Namely, Bournemouth's Milos Kerkez and Fulham speedster Antonee Robinson.

The pair have been linked with a host of other Premier League sides, including Liverpool and Chelsea, for their promising performances. United have not gone as far as pushing for adeal,l though.

Ben Chilwell has previously been mentioned as a target for the Red Devils too. Similarly to Shaw, the England full-back has been struggling with his fitness for some time. In fact, Chilwell's recent record is considerably worse.

Chelsea are willing to let the 27-year-old leave, whereas Kerkez and Robinson are both extremely valued by their clubs, but that isn't likely to be enough to convince United to make a move. Chilwell is one of the highest earners at Stamford Bridge, and much like Raheem Sterling, would be an expensive alternative with little form behind him.

Bayern Munich's Alphonso Davies is another who has been credited as being on United's radar. His contract is up next summer but has long been expected to pick Real Madrid if an exit is to follow.

It leaves United with some big calls to make as Shaw faces at least another month out with injury. Malacia is building up his sharpness but will not be rushed back. With over three months until the January transfer window opens and United can address their problem position once more, there are questions to be answered by Ten Hag.
