Pep Guardiola might have confirmed eight Man City starters vs Newcastle

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester City are into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, beating Watford despite a quick turnaround from the Arsenal win.

Pep Guardiola made nine changes to his City side and replaced a tenth at half-time. Only Kyle Walker and Jeremy Doku started both games, with the manager using his substitutes to give as much rest as possible to his senior pros.

Doku and Matheus Nunes gave City a comfortable lead, which was seen out despite Tom Ince's late consolation that threatened a nervy finish. Meanwhile, City will be without Rodri for a long time after tests revealed he requires surgery - with City waiting on a specific timeframe after some disagreement among doctors over his injury.

These are the moments you may have missed from the Etihad on Tuesday night:

Team hint for Saturday

Guardiola used his team to rest most of his starters from Sunday's epic against Arsenal - only Doku and Walker started against the Gunners and Watford. Even Mateo Kovacic, on for Rodri two days earlier, was on the bench as a mix and match midfield took to the field.

Doku was replaced at half-time, in what seemed like a pre-planned switch for the lively Savinho, giving both wingers 45 minutes. So Walker was the only man to play more than one-and-a-half games in three days, and Guardiola's use of substitutes hinted strongly at who will be selected on Saturday at Newcastle.

Josko Gvardiol was the only senior player to come off the bench and that was out of necessity as teenager Kaden Braithwaite had cramp late on. Ederson, Ruben Dias, Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo and Manu Akanji all stayed on the bench. Akanji and Bernardo barely even warmed up on the sidelines. .

Erling Haaland will also be back at St James' Park, while Walker's exertions this week surely mean Rico Lewis is in line to reclaim his spot in the North East. He didn't feature against Arsenal and will have plenty of time to recover.

Bernardo's pre-match natter

Bernardo Silva was on the bench as one of nine changes, and it never looked like he was going to come on. But he was out with the starting XI to warm up rather than jogging out with the substitutes a few minutes later. And it was Bernardo as the designated sub to support the first team with their drills - but only after a 10 minute chat with assistant manager Juanma Lillo.

As the starters were put through their paces, Bernardo stood with a ball chatting to Lillo, who was gesturing around the pitch seemingly about tactics. Strange, given Bernardo barely warmed up during the game and looked to be being saved for Newcastle.

As one of the captains in the squad, his voice carries weight, so perhaps Lillo was passing on some tactical thoughts to Bernardo to then let his teammates know throughout the warm-up rather than throw too many instructions at once. Whatever was said - it was unusual for such a long conversation between player and coach on the pitch before a game.

Guardiola's full-time chat with Foden

Job done at full time you would think. Not for Guardiola, who cut a frustrated figure on the touchline throughout the evening. And when City booked their place in the next round, he strode onto the pitch to get some things off his chest. First he headed to Savinho to get a point across, before making a beeline for Phil Foden.

Guardiola took Foden in his arm and spent a minute or two coaching him on something he had spotted. After that, Stefan Ortega was next - taking in the manager's instructions on his first start of the season. The players who played will be in no doubt that Guardiola was taking this game easy despite the number of changes.

Fans show support for Rodri

Early in the game, City fans showed their support for the team on the back of their heroic effort on Sunday. The feelgood factor was still on show in the stands, with supporters getting behind their team for the fourth time in 10 days. And there was soon a rousing rendition of 'Can we talk about Rodri' in support of City's injured midfielder.

Guardiola confirmed what fans were fearing before the game - that Rodri is set for a long spell on the sidelines. Or 'a little while' as the manager said. Rodri is in Barcelona getting extensive tests on his knee, but the support from the City faithful will be fed back to him and shows the overriding feeling around his injury is disappointment for Rodri as much as the implications on City's season.

There were also chants for Oscar Bobb, still on the sidelines, as fans used the cup game to get the songbook out ahead of back-to-back away games.
