Sir Jim Ratcliffe arrives at Villa Park as Manchester United decision on Erik ten Hag looms

by · Manchester Evening News

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has arrived at Villa Park to watch Manchester United's game against Aston Villa.

Erik ten Hag needs a positive result against Aston Villa following a challenging week. United have won just three games in all competitions this season and a defeat in Birmingham would mean they have lost four of their seven matches in the Premier League.

Depending on what happens at Villa Park, Ten Hag could be sacked during the international break, but Ratcliffe has insisted he won't be involved with the decision on his future. "I don’t want to answer that question," Ratcliffe said to the BBC when asked whether he could be sacked.

"I don’t want to answer that question. I like Erik. I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call. It’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that’s running United has only been together since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March or April – Omar [Berrada] and Dan Ashworth, they only arrived in July.

"They’ve only been there, you can count it in weeks almost. They’ve not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions. Our objective is very clear.

"We want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously. That’s very clear.”

Ratcliffe has only been present for one United win - the FA Cup final - since he acquired a minority stake in February. He has also been in attendance for Spurs at home (2-2), Chelsea away (3-4), Coventry (3-3 over 120 minutes), Arsenal at home (0-1) and Liverpool at home (0-3).
