John Stones issues stance on Man City future as contract decision looms

by · Manchester Evening News

John Stones wants to stay at Manchester City 'longer' than his current deal, which could potentially see him end his career with the club.

Stones, 30, has around 19 months left on his current City contract which expires in the summer of 2026. He arrived in 2016 for around £47m, and has since made more than 250 appearances, winning 17 trophies.

City could see Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan leave this summer as their contracts expire, while manager Pep Guardiola is yet to sign a new deal. As well as Stones, Kyle Walker, Ederson and Bernardo Silva are out of contract in 2026. But now Stones has declared his happiness at the Etihad, hinting at his openness to signing a future contract extension.

Speaking to the City magazine, he said: "From my perspective, this is the Club that I love and have been here such a long time now – and hopefully will be for a lot longer. My family are all City fans now – kids, relatives, you name it – and City are a huge part of their lives as well, so I feel privileged to be part of the fabric of this fantastic football club.”

Guardiola could yet sign an extension beyond this summer, but it may only be for another season to take his own reign into 10 seasons. If Stones did renew, he could offer some consistency within the squad into any post-Guardiola era.
