Manchester United Under-21s fell to a 1-0 defeat against rivals Liverpool on Sunday, a result which leaves them 11th in Premier League 2 after six games.

Tyler Morton’s goal was the difference between the sides in a game where United created the better chances at Leigh Sports Village Stadium.

Dan Gore impressed in midfield after travelling to Porto with the first-team squad on Thursday whilst Toby Collyer grew into the game after a quiet first 20 minutes.

Collyer, Gore and Ethan Williams were all denied brilliantly by Liverpool goalkeeper Kornel Misciur who was impressive throughout ensuring Liverpool moved up to second.

Travis Binnion’s side will be disappointed with the result given the chances they created and will be hoping to bounce back in their next game away to Newcastle.

A scrappy first 20 minutes passed without much incident except for an injury to Liverpool’s Tommy Pilling, who was replaced by ex-United Academy graduate Kieran Morrison.

Misciur made two comfortable saves but it took until the 44th minute for the first clear opportunity to appear.

Gore played an inch-perfect pass inside the area giving Ethan Ennis an opportunity to put the hosts ahead but the winger’s shot was superbly saved by Misciur before Ethan Wheatley fired the rebound wide.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Misciur tipping over Gore’s shot after a lovely drive from deep from the midfielder.

Williams was then denied from range with United looking most likely to find a goal.

In the 67th minute - against the run of play - United keeper Dermot Mee was caught playing out from the back with Morton’s initial shot being blocked before he calmly rounded the keeper to chip in from the edge of the area.

United pushed for an equaliser in the final 20 minutes but failed to properly test Liverpool’s defence.
