Erik ten Hag replacement has already 'rejected' Man United before Sir Jim Ratcliffe decision

by · Manchester Evening News

According to a report in Italy, Simone Inzaghi has already rejected an offer from Manchester United. The Inter Milan boss has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League recently, with Erik ten Hag facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford.

This follows his refusal of an agent's advances on behalf of the club towards the end of last season and during the September international break. Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport reports that Inzaghi also turned down Chelsea before they decided to replace Mauricio Pochettino with Enzo Maresca.

Instead, he penned a new contract that keeps him at the San Siro until the summer of 2026. Entering the October international break, United have only managed to secure eight points from their first seven league games.

Only newly-promoted Southampton have scored fewer goals. On Tuesday, United's board convened in London, with Ten Hag's future believed to be one of the topics under discussion.

However, the lack of communication following their monthly meeting suggests that he remains safe for now – although patience could quickly wear thin if results don't improve swiftly.

It was reported yesterday that United have not yet made a new approach for Thomas Tuchel, with Ten Hag's future as head coach still up in the air. The former Chelsea boss - who was previously engaged in discussions take charge at Old Trafford during the summer before the club decided to extend Ten Hag's contract after winning the FA Cup – is admired by United.

Tuchel, who has been without a job since he parted ways with Bayern Munich at the end of the last season, is reportedly open to a return to the Premier League. Nonetheless, there appears to be no immediate prospect of dialogue reinitiating between the German's agents and United.

United have also been linked with Gareth Southgate, who stepped down as England boss in the summer. Meanwhile, Ten Hag reportedly remains confident that he still has the support of the United board.

A meeting among higher-ups and club officials including Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Tuesday was part of regular monthly gatherings. After a dreary stalemate against Aston Villa on Sunday, Ten Hag acknowledged the team's dissatisfaction but remained unified with the board's vision.

"We are all on board together, on one page," said the former Ajax boss. "We know what we are working through. It's a long-term process."

He added: "It's external noise. Internally we're disappointed and we know we have to do better. Especially we need to score more. But I don't have any idea it is different, because they would tell me. We communicate and are very transparent."

United will next face Brentford at home on October 19 before an Europa League encounter with Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce.
