Matthijs de Ligt new 'transfer value' speaks volumes after mixed Manchester United start

by · Manchester Evening News

Matthijs de Ligt's estimated market value has seemingly fallen since he signed for Manchester United.

De Ligt joined United in the summer transfer window in a deal worth €45million (£37.7 million) with the potential of €5million (£4.2million) in add-ons. The centre-back was one of five signings by United, led by Ineos Group, with Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte also moving to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has handed nine appearances to De Ligt across the first two months of the season, including five starts. The defender scored his first goal in the 3-0 win over Southampton last month but had to settle for a place on the bench in the weekend's draw with Aston Villa before replacing the injured Harry Maguire at half-time.

After just two months as a United player, it seems that De Ligt's market value has fallen. Transfermarkt have analysed the centre-back's value and believe that it is now at €55million (£46million).

This is a significant drop from May this year, where De Ligt's value was set at €65million (£54.5million). If you go back another 12 months into the summer of 2023, De Ligt's value was €75 million (£62.3million).

United do not return to Premier League action until October 19 when they host Brentford at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen if De Ligt will return to the starting line-up after dropping to the bench against Villa at the weekend.

Ten Hag also dropped Lisandro Martinez to the bench against Villa. Jonny Evans and Maguire started at centre-back at Villa Park, with the United boss citing "rotation" as the reason for the selection.
