Glazers make nine-figure move as Man United primed for January transfer

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United fans are yet to see all of their club's summer signings take to the field, yet the hierarchy might already be thinking ahead to the January transfer window.

Leny Yoro was the first recruit of the summer but his major foot injury has prevented him from making his competitive debut for United. Supporters were handed a boost regarding his return timeline with Erik ten Hag stating this week that he expects him back in training before long.

Meanwhile, deadline day arrival Manuel Ugarte has only started two games so far, only one of which has come in the Premier League. He is expected to double his tally in Sunday’s match with Tottenham.

United sit 11th after Saturday’s results but will move into the top eight with a win. Ten Hag’s tenure continues to face scrutiny after an underwhelming start to the season after being kept on by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s new regime over the summer.

Meanwhile, co-owners the Glazers have made an applaudable gesture following recent events in Florida.

Glazers to donate $1m to hurricane aid

The Glazers are set to donate a seven-figure sum to Hurricane Helene relief efforts following the natural disaster event in Florida this week. Winds as high as 140 miles-per-hour swept through the state, causing mass damage with more than 40 confirmed deaths at the time of writing.

NFL franchise the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, based in Florida, are owned by the Glazers, who are set to donate $1million (£747,600) to recovery efforts and non-profit organisations supporting those impacted by the devastation.

A statement from the NFL outfit said: “The Glazer family has pledged $1million to support local nonprofit organizations aiding those most impacted by Hurricane Helene. The donation will be allocated to support local agencies involved in relief efforts across Tampa Bay.”

United ‘insistent’ on Branthwaite

In other news, a report from journalist Graeme Bailey claims that United are eager to land Jarrad Branthwaite in January despite having two offers rejected over the summer. United saw bids of £43m and £50m snubbed by Everton, who were refusing to budge from their £70m price tag.

New sporting director Dan Ashworth is said to be keen on revisiting the England defender with plans to move on from Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof next year when their contracts expire. United have adopted a buy-young policy under the new regime, as seen with 18-year-old Yoro and 23-year-old Manuel Ugarte.

While other options are also being assessed, the report adds that Branthwaite is the primary target. However, there are suggestions that prospective new Everton takeover owner Dan Friedkin may wish to offer a renewal to Branthwaite in a statement of intent upon arrival.
