Manchester United face Liverpool transfer 'battle' for goalkeeper as £30m duo targeted

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United have been linked with several potential new signings ahead of the January transfer window.

United had a busy summer with five new signings arriving at Old Trafford to add to Erik ten Hag's squad. Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Manuel Ugarte were all signed in the summer, and it remains to be seen if more new additions will be made in the New Year.

Even though the transfer window has been closed for nearly a month, it has not stopped the rumour mill from being in full swing linking United with further new signings. The next time United will be able to dip into the transfer market will be in January, and already speculation is starting to ramp up about what business could be conducted in 2025.

United are reportedly interested in signing Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson. According to journalist Alan Nixon, United scouts are looking at Patterson as they search for a new back-up to Andre Onana.

Altay Bayindir was signed to provide cover for Onana last year but has made just two appearances for the club. As a result, the report states that United want to sign Patterson to add further competition to the goalkeeper department.

Sunderland are thought to value Patterson at around £20 million, with Liverpool also being linked with a move in the past. The Championship club are reportedly unlikely to sanction Patterson's exit in January so United may be forced to wait until next summer.

Elsewhere, United may face competition for the signing of Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg. The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the 17-year-old midfielder who has been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Jude Bellingham.

According to a separate report from Nixon, League One club Birmingham City are showing an interest in signing Rigg. The report claims that the St Andrew's club are weighing up an offer worth £10 million to sign the Black Cats prodigy.

United have been heavily linked with a move for Rigg in recent weeks, with some reports suggesting the Reds view the midfielder as a potential successor to Roy Keane. Birmingham already splashed the cash in the summer with the signing of Jay Stansfield in a deal worth £20 million, comfortably breaking the record transfer fee for a League One club.
