Jonny Evans in action for Manchester United against Aston Villa

'Should be ashamed' - Dimitar Berbatov's brutal Manchester United message speaks volumes

by · Manchester Evening News

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has not held back in his criticism of Erik ten Hag and Unai Emery's squads after a 0-0 draw with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The Reds looked far more balanced in the West Midlands than they did on Thursday night at Porto. However, defensive stability came at the cost of attacking quality as United struggled to break the hosts down.

Bruno Fernandes came closest to scoring after he clipped the crossbar from a free kick but that was the nearest either side came to a goal. Back in the Sky Sports studio at full-time, Berbatov did not mince his words with his criticism for not only United but Villa.

"I'm trying to find the right words here," Berbatov lamented. "Everybody on the pitch today should be ashamed because Jonny Evans, credit to him, he's 36 or 37 and he's man-of-the-match.

"Everybody younger than him should take notice and next time, be better." For Ten Hag there are no guarantees that there will be a next time as the Ineos decision-makers watched on from the stands at Villa Park.

The Dutchman's position at Old Trafford has been under increased scrutiny since United lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend. MEN Sport reported on Monday that Ten Hag would not be sacked before the clash with Villa on Sunday.

However, his future beyond the game today was deemed less certain. United have failed to score in four of their last five Premier League games and this is their worse start to a Premier League campaign ever in terms of points accumulated.
