'Feel good' Mexican to open second Manchester spot after celebrating big milestone

by · Manchester Evening News

A ‘feel good’ Mexican chain is set to open its second restaurant in Manchester after hitting a huge milestone.

Zambrero, which started life in Australia almost 20 years ago, sells a range of build-your-own burritos, quesadilla stacks, nachos and tacos. Alongside a number of stores in its native country, the brand has expanded to the UK in recent years - with a restaurant located by Piccadilly Gardens.

Earlier this month, Zambrero celebrated the opening of its 300th store with a new location in Melbourne. It also has restaurants in New Zealand, the United States and in Ireland.

According to planning documents filed with Manchester Council, Zambrero is now planning to open a second location in the city centre - with a store eyed up on Cross Street in the former Royal British Legion store next to Salt Dog Slims and near Albert Square.

If approved, the Grade II-listed building would retain a number of its historical elements with no structural works required in the takeover. An opening date has not been set, with the plans now in consultation until October 30.

Founded by Dr. Sam Price, a 21-year-old medical student at the time of its first store in Braddon, Canberra in 2005, Zambrero was created to celebrate Mexican food whilst also giving back to the community. To date, its Plate 4 Plate initiative has generated more than 80 million meals for people in need.

With UK locations also including the likes of London and Birmingham, Zambrero has ‘ongoing plans’ to open more locations within ‘busy city centres’ across the country within the next ten years.

Alongside its build-your-own dishes, the chain’s menu also features the likes of signature burritos and bowls - which can include toppings including chipotle chicken, a vegetarian chilli ‘non’ carne, white rice, pinto beans and freshly-made salsas.

When it comes to puddings, there is also a 'z'mores dessert' quesadilla featuring marshmallows, chocolate spread, corn chips and cinnamon sugar.
