Manchester United starting line-up vs Aston Villa revealed as Erik ten Hag fights to save his job

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United face Aston Villa today in what could prove to be Erik ten Hag's final game as manager.

United have picked up just three wins in all competitions this season and started the day 14th in the Premier League. They are already six points off fourth spot with just six league games played.

United looked on course for a morale-boosting victory in Porto on Thursday before they threw away a two-goal lead. A late Harry Maguire header rescued a point for the Reds but that's unlikely to be enough to save Ten Hag's job if United don't produce the goods at Villa Park today.

The October international break begins after today's clash with Villa and that represents the perfect opportunity for a club to assess their start to the season. Defeat today could see Ten Hag's time at Old Trafford brought to an end.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe was asked about Ten Hag's future on Friday. "I don’t want to answer that question. I like Erik," he said. "I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call, it’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that’s running United has only been together since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March or April – Omar [Berrada] and Dan Ashworth, they only arrived in July.

"They’ve only been there, you can count it in weeks almost. They’ve not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions. Our objective is very clear.

"We want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously. That’s very clear.”

Today could be a crucial day for Ten Hag, and here's the starting XI he's picked:

GK: Onana

DF: Mazraoui, Maguire, Evans, Dalot

MF: Mainoo, Eriksen, Fernandes

FW: Garnacho, Hojlund, Rashford
