Portugal line up in Warsaw

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes sends message

by · Manchester Evening News

Bruno Fernandes claimed an assist as Portugal beat Poland 3-1 in their first Nations League fixture of the month.

Fernandes has not scored or assisted a goal for Manchester United in their past five games but he teed up Bernardo Silva with a cushioned header to put Portugal ahead in Warsaw on Saturday night.

United captain Fernandes was only substituted in added time as he played another 90 minutes. United teammate Diogo Dalot played the full duration, starting at right back.

Dalot has lined up in all but one of United's 11 games at left back this term. He is expected to continue at left back against Brentford next week following Noussair Mazraoui's corrective heart procedure after suffering palpitations during the goalless draw with Aston Villa a week ago.

Portugal next play Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday, ensuring Dalot and Fernandes will have a short journey back to Manchester. The Salford-born former United youth-teamer Maxi Oyedele, now at Legia Warsaw, made his full debut for Poland against Portugal.

In Spain, Christian Eriksen started for Denmark in their 1-0 Nations League loss to the European champions. Eriksen, who has started in six of the past seven United matches, played 73 minutes.

Rasmus Hojlund started the game on the bench and emerged in the 78th minute, having indicated he would not play 90 minutes for the national side. Hojlund made his first club start in nearly five months in the Europa League draw with Porto last week, having been sidelined for eight weeks with a hamstring injury.

Denmark play again on Tuesday away to Switzerland, which could have a bearing on Hojlund's place in the United team against Brentford at Old Trafford on Saturday. The 21-year-old will participate in two team training sessions, at the most, whereas fellow striker Joshua Zirkzee is expected to return to United's Carrington training complex sooner.

The Netherlands play their second game of this international fortnight against Germany in Munich on Monday, a day earlier than Denmark's fixture with Switzerland.
