Tuchel, Carrick, Van Nistelrooy - Man United next manager odds as Erik ten Hag wait continues

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United supporters continue to wait for news on Erik ten Hag's future - after the club's dismal start to the season at Old Trafford and discussions over his position.

Before October's international break, United were sat 14th in the Premier League standings while managing just a couple of draws to start their Europa League charge. That dismal 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur put Ten Hag on the brink, seemingly, but he was given until the end of last week to try and turn things in the right direction.

Draws against Porto and Aston Villa did little to lift confidence with Ten Hag the key topic of conversation among the Ineos decision-makers on Tuesday when they met in London. The Manchester Evening News understands the lack of an official statement regarding Ten Hag's exit does not necessarily mean his job is safe, with it perhaps fairer to suggest that the Dutchman is in limbo while he takes a break with his family this week.

Considering the speculation circulating around the club, the bookmakers continue to offer up odds on who will become the next manager of United. The favourite at present with Bet365 is former Bayern Munich and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Manchester Evening News reported on Monday that Tuchel was being lined-up as a potential replacement for Ten Hag should they decide to sack the Dutchman. A surprising second-favourite is Middlesbrough boss and former United midfielder Michael Carrick.

Carrick was well-regarded at Old Trafford and had a brief spell as manager when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked. He stepped aside once Ralf Rangnick was appointed interim and left the club in search of a new challenge.

In the North East, Boro find themselves just outside the play-off places in the Championship. Meanwhile, current United assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy remains in the running, with the bookies, and it has been reported that he could be in-line to become caretaker manager should Ten Hag depart.
