George Baldock's family issue statement after footballer's tragic cause of death confirmed

George Baldock's family have released a statement after the Panathinaikos defender's tragic death aged 31.

Concerns were raised by Baldock's wife after being out of touch for hours, leading to emergency services being dispatched. Baldock was subsequently found dead in the pool of his villa on Wednesday.

The full-back moved to Athens to play for Panathinaikos after spending seven fruitful years at Sheffield United, where he enjoyed two promotions. He had also played for the Greek national team and was due to watch them play against England at a packed Wembley Stadium, reports the Mirror.

"We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time," a statement from the family said.

His team, Panathinaikos, reacted with profound sorrow, saying: "We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock."

Sheffield United expressed deep regret stating: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him."

Baldock, began his career at MK Dons and made 125 appearances for the club. During his time at MK Dons, he gained experience through loan spells at Northampton, Oxford, Tamworth, and Icelandic team IBV.

Northampton Town expressed their sorrow in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31. George made 5 appearances in 2011 on loan from MK Dons before playing for Oxford and Sheff Utd. Sending our sincerest condolences to George's family and friends."

The football community has been paying tribute, with Harry Maguire, the Manchester United defender formerly of Sheffield United, being one of the first to offer his respects on social media. Kyle Walker-Peters, a close friend of Baldock's off the field, also shared his heartfelt memories of times spent together, including holidays, as he mourned the loss of the 31-year-old.
