Man United create Casemiro January transfer exit path as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer return tipped

by · Manchester Evening News

The international break is in full swing but Manchester United still have work to do. The future of Erik ten Hag remains a key talking point after a difficult start to the season.

After an internal meeting in London on Tuesday, the Dutchman remains in a job. How long that lasts, who knows? But while the international break is ongoing, preparation is continuing at Carrington ahead of next week's Premier League clash with Brentford.

Here, MEN Sport takes a look at the latest headlines surrounding United.

Solskjaer next 'job'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly declined the opportunity to return to management with the Denmark national team due to being 'in negotiations with a big club'.

According to journalist Farzam Abolhosseini, the ex-United boss is in talks with a club to return to management meaning he has rejected the chance to step into international management.

MEN Sport says: "Is it a coincidence that Solskjaer is in talks over a return to management when the United job opens up? I doubt it, whatever the job is, it's the perfect time for him to return.

"After taking a long break from football, Solskjaer will be itching to show what he can do. If it's in England, he will have a point to prove in the Premier League. However, turning down the chance to manage a well-established European team is a big decision."

Casemiro transfer plan

Man United will look to sell Casemiro when the January transfer window opens after failing to sell the midfielder in the summer. According to former chief scout Mick Brown, who spent a decade at the club, United will attempt to get the Brazilian's wages off their bill in the winter.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I’m told they’ll look to cash in on him as soon as they can, on the first of January if possible,” he said. “He’s one of the biggest wage-earners and he’s not going to feature regularly in the first team.

“He’s been benched because he hasn’t been performing and can’t do it any more. I’m sure they would love to offload him if they could to get him out of the squad and off the wage bill, which would allow them to spend some money.

“Whether it’s a move to Saudi Arabia or elsewhere, you’ve got to find someone who’s willing to pay the money both to United and to him. They’re not going to make back anywhere near what they paid for him but they’ll look to bring in some money if they do let him go.“

MEN Sport says: "This transfer seems to have been on the cards for some time. He seemed destined to leave United in the summer but he remained. He has played quite often for Ten Hag this season but has struggled at times.

"He's on a big contract on huge wages so selling him would be huge. But who is going to sign him in the winter? I'm struggling to see where United will get interest from.

"It all depends on who is in charge at Old Trafford when the window opens. If it's Ten Hag, it's hard to see how Casemiro remains."
