George Baldock, Greece defender and former Sheffield United player, dies at age 31

The Panathinaikos defender helped Sheffield United earn Premier League promotion twice

Panathinaikos and Greece national team right back George Baldock has died at age 31. His former club, Sheffield United, along with the Greek Super League, announced his passing on Wednesday. The player was found dead in a swimming pool, according to Reuters

Baldock was a key member of Sheffield United who were promoted to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023 while he played for them. 

"The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones," the Greek Super League said in a statement.

While being born in England, due to his heritage, Baldock was able to play for the Greece national team, earning his first call-up in May of 2022 before debuting in a 1-0 victory against Nothern Ireland. The right back joined Panathinaikos during the summer after seven years with Sheffield United, making four appearances this season.

"Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock," Sheffield United said in a statement. "The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff, and teammates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him. The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George's family and friends."

Baldock has been a well-traveled player during his career debuting with MK Dons, while he also played for Northampton Town, Tamworth, IBV, and Oxford United before moving to Sheffield United. He also earned 12 caps for the Greek national team.
