Georgia suspends Colbie Young after WR arrested on misdemeanor charges of battery, assault on an unborn child

Young is in his first season with the Bulldogs after transferring from Miami

Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely after he was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with battery and assault on an unborn child, both misdemeanor charges. Young was booked by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department at 4:18 a.m. ET. He was later released on a $2,500 bond for the assault charge. 

"I got to speak to him this morning, he's been suspended indefinitely until this legal matter is resolved," Georgia coach Kirby Smart said on the SEC Coaches Teleconference. "We can't really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning. We're committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents. It's very unfortunate, but we want to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field. This is obviously a really tough situation, but he's suspended indefinitely until the legal matter is resolved." 

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Young is in his first season with the Bulldogs after transferring in from Miami. He is currently fourth on the team with 11 catches for 149 yards and tied for second with two touchdowns receiving. 

After a quiet start to the season, Young did have at least 50 yards receiving in each of Georgia's past two games, including a season-high 57 yards in the Week 5 loss against Alabama. Young has also logged six of his 11 catches in the past two weeks. 

Prior to entering the transfer portal, Young spent two seasons at Miami. He had 939 total yards -- 563 during the 2023 season -- and 10 touchdowns with the Hurricanes, catching five scores each from 2022-23. He averaged just under 12 yards per catch. 

Young signed with Miami in 2022 as a three-star junior college prospect out of Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
