SportsLine's model revealed its CFB picks and predictions for USC Trojans vs. Penn State Nittany Lions on CBS and Paramount+

· CBS Sports

A new Big Ten rivalry begins during the Week 7 college football schedule as the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0) travel to take on the USC Trojans (3-2) on CBS and Paramount+. Penn State is off to a 2-0 start in Big Ten play and is currently well-situated to be in the College Football Playoff mix. USC, meanwhile, has dropped two of its first three Big Ten games, including losing as an 8.5-point favorite at Minnesota last week, making this an urgent spot for USC. This is the first meeting between the programs since USC defeated Penn State 52-19 in the 2017 Rose Bowl.

Kickoff from LA Memorial Coliseum is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The Nittany Lions are 3.5-point favorites in the latest Penn State vs. USC odds via SportsLine consensus. The over/under is 50.5, down from opening at 53.5. Why Penn State can cover

Junior quarterback Drew Allar deserves a lot of credit for Penn State's perfect start. He's completing 70.9% of his passes for 1,101 yards and nine touchdowns. He's done a great job of limiting mistakes, throwing just one interception and taking only six sacks on the season.

Penn State's rushing offense ranks third in the Big Ten and it is hopeful to get running back Nicholas Singleton back this week after he missed Week 6 with an undisclosed injury. Head coach James Franklin said he's optimistic that he'll be able to play this week. Singleton teams up with bruiser Kaytron Allen to spearhead a rushing attack that averages 217.8 yards per game. USC, meanwhile, ranks 87th nationally in rushing defense. See picks at SportsLine.

Why USC can cover

Though Penn State is undefeated, the Nittany Lions had a close call against Bowling Green, a MAC squad, in Week 2, surviving 34-27. They also weren't overly impressive against UCLA, one of worst teams in the Big Ten, in Week 6, letting the Bruins stick around until late in the third quarter.

USC's two losses have come on the road and now they're getting more than a field at home after the lookahead lines had USC around +1.5. Overall, USC's defense looks a lot better this year compared to 2023, and Riley's offense, while not clicking on all cylinders, is still averaging more than 30 points per game thus far.
