Motherwell have been dealt a blow with news that striker Jack Vale is out long-term with a calf injury.

The on-loan Blackburn Rovers hit man broke down with the injury on Wednesday in training, and a scan has provided bad news.

Defender Stephen O’Donnell was also taken off during Friday’s 2-1 Premier Sports Cup quarter-final win over Dundee United and will also require a scan.

Boss Stuart Kettlewell said: “There’s a bit of bad news on Jack, he’s sustained a calf injury two days ago, we got the scan results on that earlier today, and it looks as if he’s going to be out for a long period of time.

“Stephen O’Donnell we don’t know. He’s sustained an injury to his shoulder, so we’ll just need to get him scanned and see what’s going on there.

“It’s a bit of a blow with the two of them, to be honest, but we’ll try not to dampen the spirits too much.”

Kettlewell says his players will get a couple of days off, but attention then turns to the visit of St Mirren next weekend.

He said: “We won’t get carried away, the attention very quickly moves back on to next weekend, but it would be nice if we had that same sort of atmosphere, same sort of performance, and try to come out with another victory.

“It’s going to be hard, but we’ve said we’ll give the players a couple of days off, which sticks in my craw. But they’ve earned it after that week they’ve had, the performance and the result, and we’ll make sure we’re ready to go again on Monday.”
