Scott McTominay has been told he holds the key to putting Napoli back on their 'Tower' - as fans rally against the myth that he wasn't good enough for the Premier League.
The Scotland midfielder is Napoli's latest hero, stepping into the shoes of Marek Hamsik and providing the central building block for Antonio Conte's runaway Serie A leaders. Clips and fan edits are all over social media show the former Manchester United man run riot and he could hardly have imagined the move, alongside his Tartan teammate Billy Gilmour, going any better.
While many United fans wished him well and feel letting him go was generally a mistake, it's been a case of sour grapes for others - with a theory circulating that McTominay's impressive form is a sign that Serie A is inferior to the Premier League. But Napoli fans, you'll be amazed to hear, aren't having that.
One wrote: "How to criticise McTominay... Oh yes it's true that Fred was stronger. Come on, we have to stop this bulls***," while another said: "However, the more I spend time on Twitter, the more I realize how underrated Scott McTominay is, he doesn't miss a game or a tackle. Always ahead of the game, he always knows what he has to do and he understands it with less playing time than the others. Do they praise him (in England)? No, on the contrary."
Another detracting take criticised McTominay's perceived attacking output, with just the two goals in eight games so far. But one punter replied: "You say that because we were used to Hamsik scoring 15 goals a year, but McTominay is a different kind of midfielder and he's doing what he has to do very well, especially considering that he's only been here for 2 months and without having done any preparation."
Elsewhere in Italy, Gazzetta dello Sport have been raving about him again and they reckon he is what has been needed to 'return Napoli to its Tower' at the top of Italian football. They wrote: "To rebuild Napoli and return it to its tower, Scott McTominay was needed, 255 appearances with Manchester United, a strong personality to face the melancholy of Zielinski's farewell and an experience that would also support the tactical revolution.
"Football must be for the competent and Conte had already chosen the score, regardless of the module: in the 3-4-3 there would have been space for McTominay, but also in the 3-4-2-1, in the 4-3-3, in the 4-2-3-1 or maybe in this 4-2-4 so changeable in the passive phase, a way could have been found to let him do it "
