St Mirren have suspended defender Shaun Rooney following an alleged incident in Glasgow city centre last week.

The 28-year-old defender told the Buddies about the potential matter and the club have made their decision on a "precautionary" basis while an investigation is carried out.

Saints, who are fifth in the Premiership and face Motherwell at Fir Park this Saturday, released a short statement this evening informing fans of developments.

It read: "St Mirren Football Club has suspended Shaun Rooney today, on a precautionary basis, after he disclosed to the club his involvement in an alleged incident in Glasgow city centre last week.

"The club will now undertake a full investigation into this incident and will make no further comment during this process."

Rooney has been a first-team regular for Saints after signing a two-year deal in the summer following a spell with Sky Bet League Two side Fleetwood Town.

The wing-back, who has made 10 appearances for the Buddies, scored just 16 minutes into his debut at home to Icelandic outfit FC Valur in the UEFA Conference League at the beginning of last month.

He is a St Johnstone legend after netting the winners in both the Scottish Cup and League Cup finals at Hampden three years ago. The Perth side won both matches 1-0 to ensure Rooney's place in the McDiarmid Park history books.
