Thomas Tuchel in England 'talks' after Lee Carsley fluffs his lines in Three Lions audition

The German boss has been out of work since losing his job at Bayern Munich back in May

by · Daily Record

Thomas Tuchel is in talks over the vacant position as manager of the England national team - according to a report.

The Three Lions have been searching for a new boss since Gareth Southgate stepped down from the role in the wake of their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final in Germany last summer. U21 manager Lee Carsley has stepped up to the hot seat on an interim basis and emerged victorious in his first two matches only to be on the end of an embarrassing 2-1 loss to Greece at Wembley in the Nations League B on Thursday night.

But according to Sky Germany, Champions League winner Tuchel is now in negotiations to land the role. The likes of Graham Potter, Eddie Howe and Pep Guardiola had all been linked with the vacancy, but Tuchel, 51, has appeared to emerge as the frontrunner. The German coach has been out of work since getting the sack at Bayern Munich last season after finishing third in the Bundesliga behind champions Bayer Leverkusen and runners' up Stuttgart.

Tuchel previously lifted the league title with Bayern in 2023, having previously led Paris Saint-Germain to two Ligue 1 Championships in 2019 and 2020. But his finest hour came at Chelsea in the 2020/21 campaign when he guided an unfancied Blues side to glory in the Champions League with a 1-0 win against Premier League rivals Manchester City thanks to a lone goal from Kai Havertz.

He also led Chelsea to triumphs in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before controversially being dismissed by new Stamford Bridge owner Todd Boehly in September 2022. Tuchel started his managerial career with FC Augsburg's reserve team in 2007 before five successful years in charge of Mainz saw him follow in compatriot Jurgen Klopp's footsteps by taking up the reins at Borussia Dortmund in 2015, where he won the DFB Pokal two years later.
