Dumfries Ladies 1s 12 Giffnock Ladies 0

Dumfries Ladies 1s faced the newly promoted Giffnock in their second game of the season on Saturday.

The ladies made their intentions clear right from the start, with Beth McCall scoring within the first minute.

Giffnock struggled to find space from hit outs as Dumfries pressed effectively, leading to a lot of possession in the opposition half, resulting in well taken goals from Drife and Topping to give Dumfries a 3-0 lead after 12 minutes.

Giffnock’s speedy midfielders made some assertive runs into the Dumfries half but calm, defensive play from Bell, Irving, Anderson and Bryce ensured there was no way through.

Dumfries continued to look dominant, using the width provided by Austin, Rowcroft and Edgar to create numerous opportunities on goal with Morrin and McCall adding to the tally before the half time whistle. 5-0.

Giffnock started the second half positively, looking to close the gap on Dumfries but were beginning to tire. Forwards Milne and Drife were making life very difficult for the Giffnock defence and were awarded a number of penalties. Eventually captain Nicholson received the left slip from McCall and fired home the sixth goal of the match.

After more Giffnock infringements in the shooting D, Dumfries were awarded a penalty flick which McCall slotted away with ease. Giffnock were struggling to make it out of their half. Further goals from Topping (3), Law and Drife saw the game finish 12-0.

A quiet afternoon for keeper McCubbin, however, her direction from the back ensured Dumfries maintained their structure and composure. Thanks to umpire James Aitken.

Hillhead Men 7s 2 Dumfries Men 2s 4

A strong start from Dumfries, with two early chances falling to McFarlane and Brown. Then a breakthrough goal from Kershaw, assisted by McFarlane in the 12th minute was quickly followed by a second – great teamwork finished off by Freddie.

Dumfries stepped-back a little and Hillhead got a goal back but this galvanised the Dumfries team and Brown got his second, 3-1 to Dumfries at half-time.

Early in the second half, Hillhead made it 2-3 and Dumfries keeper, Steele had to make a couple of saves to avoid more goals. Rennie then took control in defence, allowing the youthful midfield to attack to create chances and eventually they got a fourth goal, scrambled over the line by Bean.
