In Short

  • Mehidy Hasan has batted at No.5 and 7 in the T20I series vs India
  • Mehidy Hasan leaked 46 runs in 3 overs in the Delhi T20I
  • Bangladesh are trailing 2-0 in the T20I series

Fielding coach Nick Pothas said that Bangladesh are trying to find a role for Mehidy Hasan Miraz that is best suited to the all-rounder in T20Is. Earlier, the Tigers roped in Mehidy for the T20Is against India at the expense of Mahedi Hasan. Missing out on the T20 World Cup, Mehidy made a comeback to the T20I setup after more than a year following Shakib Al Hasan’s retirement from the shortest format.

Mehidy batted at No.7 in the first T20I in Gwalior, where he scored a fighting 35. After being promoted to No.5 for the Delhi T20I, Miraz made a run-a-ball 16. Pothas said that Miraz is versatile as a batter and be slotted both in the top and middle order for Bangladesh.

"It's very conditions based and we're very fortunate to have Miraz because he can bat at the top of the order, and he can bat at the middle order, and we have seen the progress he has made from a batting point of view," Pothas said in the pre-match press conference of the third T20I.

‘Very fortunate to have a cricketer of Mehidy’s standing’

The 26-year-old Mehidy, however, hasn’t had the best of outings with the ball. After bowling only a solitary over in Gwalior where he dismissed Sanju Samson, he had a torrid time in Delhi, finishing with figures of 3-0-46-3.

"You know we have tried him at the top with the ball, which he has done well in the past. The last game, it can happen, it's T20. He gives us options because he has three skills which are of a very high quality,” Pothas said.

"So at the moment because he wasn't at the T20 World Cup again, we are going to be using him in different positions to actually find a role where he will play for the future. But at the moment we are very fortunate to have a international cricketer of his standing to be able to use wherever we think he fits in for that particular game and conditions," Pothas added.

Having already conceded the series 2-0, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s Bangladesh will be looking to avoid a clean-sweep in the third and final match on Saturday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.
