Waste of a wicket: Ravi Shastri slams Virat Kohli after poor run-out

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri slammed Virat Kohli after the senior batter got out trying to take a quick single late in the day. Shastri called Kohli's wicket unnecessary and was furious with the batter.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri slammed Virat Kohli for throwing his wicket away in the Mumbai Test match against New Zealand. Kohli, batting in the final minutes of Day 1, got out trying to pick up a quick single off Rachin Ravindra at mid-on.

Having batted only 5 balls in the Test match, Kohli risked himself trying to take a quick single and fell short of his crease while taking-on Matt Henry, Shastri slammed the former India captain and said that Kohli threw his wicket away in the Test match. Kohli's wicket was the fourth of the Indian innings as an epic meltdown brought India down from 78/1 to 86/4 at the end of the day's play.

"What a waste of a wicket. Don't know what was going through his mind," Ravi Shastri said while commentating on the game.

Virat Kohli was furious with himself after he made a judgment error. He was caught short at the non-striker’s end after Matt Henry pulled off a direct hit at the fag end of the day’s play on Friday, November 1. Kohli scored four runs off six balls before being run out. From being at 78 for one in 17.1 overs, India lost three wickets in a space of eight balls. India finished Day 1 at 86 for four as they still trailed by 149 runs.

Kohli hasn’t had the best of outings thus far in the series, having scored only 92 runs from five innings at an average of 16.40. Barring his 70-run knock in the second innings of the opening Test in Bengaluru, Kohli has looked out of sorts.

Earlier, India bowled the Black Caps out for 235 in 65.4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja picked up a five-wicket haul after getting the wickets of Will Young, Tom Blundell, Glenn Phillips, Ish Sodhi and Matt Henry. Washington Sundar accounted for four scalps and also became the top wicket-taker in the ongoing three-match Test series.
