Sarfaraz Khan scored his very first duck in Test cricket for India as Devon Conway took his diving catch on Day 2 of the 1st Test between India and New Zealand at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 17. Thursday. Sarfaraz Khan, who was given a go in the 1st Test in Shubman Gill's absence, failed to make the opportunity count. It was a poor shot from Sarfaraz as Conway picked up a screamer at the extra cover to send the batter back to the pavilion after just three deliveries.

Matt Henry who was bowling a fine opening spell in the overcast conditions, bowled a length delivery just outside the off-stump. Sarfaraz looked to counter-attack and got into a horrible position to mis-hit the delivery. The ball was past Conway's body, but he sprang to his right and the ball stuck to his palm. Sarfaraz's wicket left India in a much more precarious position as the team found themselves reeling at 10/3 in Bengaluru. It was a missed opportunity for Sarfaraz, who made a return to the playing XI, replacing Shubman Gill who is recovering from stiffness in his neck. The 26-year-old did not get the opportunity in the Bangladesh Test series. However, Sarfaraz scored a brilliant double century in the Irani Cup for Mumbai and found his way back into the team for the 1st Test.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first in overcast conditions, with the pitch offering a lot of aid to the fast bowlers.
