Josh Inglis has been appointed as Australia's captain for the upcoming T20I series against Pakistan and will also lead the ODI side in the final match of the current series in Perth, as key Test players focus on preparations for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Inglis takes over the ODI captaincy from Pat Cummins, the Test captain, who—along with Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, and Steve Smith—will miss the final ODI against Pakistan to concentrate on their Test commitments. To bolster the ODI squad, pacers Spencer Johnson and Xavier Bartlett have been called up, along with wicketkeeper-batter Josh Phillipe.

Lance Morris was previously added to the squad for the opening game in Melbourne, while Hazlewood was occupied with Sheffield Shield duties. Hazlewood has now rejoined the ODI squad in Adelaide for the second match of the three-game series at Adelaide Oval on Friday, with Bartlett travelling as a reserve.

With Cummins focusing on Test cricket and Australia’s regular T20I captain Mitchell Marsh on paternity leave, Inglis will assume leadership in both the ODI and T20I formats for the first time. This makes him Australia’s 30th ODI captain since the format’s debut under Bill Lawry in 1971 and the 14th T20I captain since the format’s inception for Australia in 2005.

The Australia selection panel chairman George Bailey called Inglis an integral members of the white-ball teams and claimed he is a highly respected player on and off the field. Bailey expects the wicketkeeper to bring tactical nous and a positive approach to the game.

"Josh is an integral member of the ODI and T20I teams and a highly respected player on and off the field," said Bailey.

"He has led Australia A previously and will bring strong tactical nous and a positive approach to the role."

"Josh will receive great support from the likes of Matt Short and Adam Zampa, along with senior players including Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis."
