Stefanos Tsitsipas fails to qualify for ATP Finals as five-year streak ends

Paris Masters 2024: Stefanos Tsitsipas's chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin ended when he lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarter-final of the Paris Masters.

Stefanos Tsitsipas's hopes of qualifying for the prestigious season-ending ATP Finals in Turin for the sixth successive season came to an end after the Greek star lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals of Paris Masters on Friday, November 1.

Tsitsipas won the ATP Finals in his maiden appearance in 2019 and had qualified for the year-ending tournament in each of the next four editions. The upcoming edition of the ATP Finals will be played from November 10 to 17.

After a hard-fought victory over Francisco Cerundolo in the round of 16, Tsitsipas advanced to the quarterfinals, where he faced Alexander Zverev. This match proved to be the decisive factor in his qualification bid. Zverev, who is currently ranked higher and has already secured his spot in Turin, defeated Tsitsipas with a convincing 7-5, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals. This loss ended Tsitsipas's hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals, as he needed to win the Paris title to break into the top eight of the ATP Race To Turin.

Tsitsipas's 2024 season has been marked by inconsistency and below-par performances, particularly at the Grand Slams. He reached the quarterfinals at the French Open but struggled in the other majors, exiting in the fourth round of the Australian Open, the second round at Wimbledon, and the first round at the US Open. Despite winning his third Monte Carlo Masters title in April, Tsitsipas lacked the consistency that vaulted him into the top 10 consistently in the last few years.

SINNER LEADS THE RACE

As expected, Jannik Sinner is on the top spot of the ATP Race to Turin Rankings. Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev complete the top three while Daniil Medvededv and Taylor Fritz are in the top 5. Novak Djokovic, who failed to win a Grand Slam title in 2024, is at the sixth spot.

Meanwhile, Alexander Zverev joined Novak Djokovic (78) and Rafael Nadal (76) as the third active player to reach the semi-final of a Masters 1000 tournament at least 20 times. He also became the first player born in the 1990s to earn 100 Top 20 wins (100-101). The 28-year-old Daniil Medvedev, born in 1996, is second, holding a 99-73 record.

Zverev will face 2022 champion Holger Rune in the semi-finals after the Dane overcame Alex de Minaur 6-4 4-6 7-5.
