Manchester City’s injury woes deepened following their 2-1 League Cup loss to Tottenham Hotspur, with winger Savinho and defender Manuel Akanji joining the club’s growing list of sidelined players. Manager Pep Guardiola now faces a tough situation, with just 13 fit players available.
Savinho had to be stretchered off in the 62nd minute due to an apparent ankle injury, while Akanji was unable to start after experiencing a muscle issue during warm-up. They join an already lengthy injury list that includes key players like Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri, and Kyle Walker, along with recent absentees Oscar Bobb, Jeremy Doku, and Jack Grealish.
Speaking to the reporters after their League Cup exit, Guardiola said that he and City find themselves in real difficulty with the number of injuries that they have at the moment. The Spanish tactician also feels that the players who play in the matches finish with problems as well.
Guardiola claimed that he hasn't seen such an injury situation at City in his time with the club. The City boss also said Savinho isn't in danger at the moment and will assess the winger's condition.
"We have 13 players (available) so we are in real difficulty. The guys that play, they finish most of them with problems and we'll see how they recover," Guardiola told reporters.
"I think we are in trouble, because in nine years we've never been in the situation with so many injuries."
"Hopefully he (Savinho) is not in danger but we will see... Akanji yesterday, I didn't know it, in the last action felt something in the muscular part of his body and today in the warm-up he didn't feel good."
Guardiola pleased with youngsters
Pep Guardiola praised the Academy talents who rose to the occasion in Manchester City’s Carabao Cup clash against Tottenham. Despite the challenges posed by numerous injuries, the young players stepped up and delivered impressive performances, earning commendation from their manager.
The likes of James McAtee, Jacob Wright and Rico Lewis received praise from Guardiola.
“I’m really pleased with what I’ve seen – really pleased. 90 minutes, so composed against a team that is so, so dangerous," said Guardiola.
City will face Bournemouth in their next fixture in the Premier League.
