Smriti Mandhana shared an update on Harmanpreet Kaur’s neck injury in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 match against Pakistan on Sunday in Dubai. Harmanpreet walked off retired hurt in the penultimate over of India’s run-chase. She was seen holding her neck and looked in discomfort as the physiotherapist treated her.

After scoring 29 runs off 24 balls, Harmanpreet walked off, following which Sajeevan Sajana hit the winning four. Later, instead of her, it was Mandhana who came out for the post-match presentation ceremony and said that the Indian skipper’s injury was being assessed by the medical staff.

“Too soon to say anything. The medical team is looking at it,” Mandhana said.

After being asked to field, India restricted Pakistan to 105 for eight. Mandhana accepted that India could have performed better in their run-chase, but was happy with the win, eventually.

“We have been very disciplined, followed the plans. In the field, we were very good. A better start with the bat would have been good, but we will take that win,” Mandhana said.

‘We were a little calculative’

With the win, India got their net run rate to -1.217, which was -2.900, after their 58-run loss to New Zealand. But the Women in Blue remain way behind the White Ferns’ +2.900 and Australia’s +1.908. Chasing a target of 106, India romped home on the back of Shafali Verma’s 32 and Harmanpreet’s useful knock.

“We did think about it. Me and Shafali could not time the ball. We didn't want to end up losing a lot of wickets. We were a little calculative. The NRR is in our head,” Mandhana said.

India are also wary of the threat that Sri Lanka might pose in their next game on October 9. “They have been playing good cricket, but this game will give us the momentum,” Mandhana added.
