Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola welcomed new Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim to the Premier League and claimed he wasn't the best man to give the Portuguese tactician advice. Amorin replaced Erik ten Hag as the new Manchester United manager as the Dutchman was sacked after a poor start to the campaign.
Amorim has made a reputation as one of the best young managers in Europe at the moment for the work he has done with Sporting. United made the official announcement on November 1 and said that the Portuguese tactician will take over during the international break. Speaking to the reporters, Guardiola said he would congratulate and talk to Amorim during Tuesday when City face Sporting in the Champions League.
"Welcome to United, to England. I congratulate him, [we will speak] next Tuesday. I'm not the right person to give advice to colleagues."
“They have a lot of people at United who can give information about what is happening at United," said Guardiola.
Expect best from Sporting in UCL
Manchester City and Sporting will square off in the Champions League on Tuesday, November 5, in Lisbon and Guardiola doesn't expect the Portuguese side or Amorim to be distracted by the United news. The City boss said that he expects Sporting to be at their best, something he expects from each team he faces.
Guardiola stressed that his focus will now be on Bournemouth, who they will face on Sunday, November 3.
“I expect the best [Sporting]” he said. “The best advice we can have: when you play an opponent, always expect the best performance, that’s for sure."
“I’m pretty sure they will do it. It’s a Champion League game against Manchester City. But you have to understand that my concern now is not that,” said Guardiola.
After their Champions League clash on Tuesday, Amorim and Guardiola will face off in 2 Manchester derbies in the Premier League. The first one take place at Etihad stadium on December 15 and the second one will be at Old Trafford on April 5, 2025.
Amorim's first match in charge of United will be the away fixture against Ipswich on November 24.
