Kolkata Knight Riders decided not to retain their Indian Premier League-winning captain Shreyas Iyer. KKR released their retention list on Thursday, October 31, and decided to snub their captain, who helped them win the IPL title after 10 long years.
Iyer, who returned to lead KKR after missing the 2023 season with a back injury, scored 351 runs from 14 matches at a strike-rate of 146.86. The batter hit 34 fours and 14 sixes last season and was able to make the star-studded unit come together under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir and Chandrakanth Pandit.
It was a surprising move from the title-winning franchise, who opted to retain Rinku Singh (INR 13 Crore), Varun Chakravarthy (INR 12 Crore), Sunil Narine (INR 12 Crore), Andre Russell (INR 12 Crore), Harshit Rana (INR 4 Crore) and Ramandeep Singh (INR 4 Crore). Having retained 6 players for INR 57 Crore, KKR go into the auction with INR 63 crore in their purse.
Iyer played a key role as a leader for KKR a he led them to their third IPL title after a gap of ten years. The Mumbai-born cricketer was going through a tumultuous period in his life having lost his BCCI Central Contract but decided to make a point with his performances and leadership as he led KKR to a long-awaited triumph. Meanwhile, after being released from his franchise, Iyer will join former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Rishabh Pant and former Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain KL Rahul in the mega auction.
Notably, both Pant and Rahul were released by their franchises as they missed the retentions list. The duo will be the most sought after players in the mega auction along with Shreyas Iyer.
