India is set to host Bangladesh for the 2nd Test match at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, starting September 27, Friday. The Rohit Sharma-led team registered an emphatic win by 280 runs in the first Test at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Team India will be aiming to make a clean-sweep by winning the 2nd Test as they lead the series 1-0 against Bangladesh. Despite a dominating win, India were troubled by the Bangladesh bowlers, especially the likes of Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed. It will be interesting to see as to what kind of pitch would be on offer in Kanpur. In 23 Test matches at the Green Park, India have won seven while losing three and the remaining 13 have resulted in draws.

The last time India played a Test match in Kanpur was during the 2021 series against New Zealand. It turned out to be a thrilling encounter that ended in a dramatic draw. India, led by Ajinkya Rahane in the absence of Virat Kohli, won the toss and opted to bat first at Green Park. Despite an early setback, losing Mayank Agarwal for 13, Shubman Gill (52) and Cheteshwar Pujara (26) steadied the innings with a 61-run stand.

Shreyas Iyer shines on Test debut

However, it was debutant Shreyas Iyer who stole the show with a brilliant century. Iyer's 105, supported by Ravindra Jadeja's 50, helped India post a competitive 345 in their first innings. Ravichandran Ashwin also contributed a useful 38.

New Zealand's bowlers, especially Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson, were exceptional. Southee picked up five wickets, making the most of the early overcast conditions, while Jamieson claimed three.

In response, New Zealand started strongly, with openers Will Young (89) and Tom Latham (95) putting up a solid 151-run partnership. The duo was in command until Ashwin dismissed Young, and Axar Patel removed Latham just short of his century. After the openers, the New Zealand middle-order collapsed, with Axar taking a five-wicket haul and Ashwin chipping in with three wickets. New Zealand were bowled out for 296, giving India a 49-run lead.

A thrilling draw between India and New Zealand

India's second innings began shakily, with Southee and Jamieson again causing trouble, reducing the hosts to 51/5. However, Shreyas Iyer (65) and Wriddhiman Saha (61*) rescued the team with a crucial partnership. India declared at 234/7, setting New Zealand a target of 284.

New Zealand's chase was tough, and India reduced them to 155/9, thanks to Ashwin and Jadeja's efforts. However, debutant Rachin Ravindra (18*) and Ajaz Patel (2*) batted out the final few overs, saving the match for New Zealand. The game ended in a nail-biting draw as bad light stopped play with just eight minutes remaining on the final day.
