IND vs NZ: Shubman Gill misses out on hundred, crosses 800 Test runs in 2024

Shubman Gill narrowly missed out on a century, being dismissed for 90, but crossed the 800-run mark for the year in Test cricket. His innings helped India recover after a precarious position on Day 1 against New Zealand at Wankhede.

Shubman Gill would agonizingly miss out on a well-deserved hundred as the Indian batter was dismissed for 90 on November 2, Saturday. Gill would, however, go past the 800-run mark for the calendar year in Tests with his knock at the Wankhede stadium.

Gill came in to bat in the 7th over after Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Matt Henry. He began cautiously but soon found his rhythm, building a 50-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal. However, he could only watch as India’s steady position of 78 for 1 turned precarious at 84 for 4 within just nine balls by the end of Day 1. With Rishabh Pant at the other end, Gill was set to play a crucial role in India’s recovery on Day 2.

The next morning, Pant struck three early boundaries off Ajaz Patel, while Gill, resuming on 31, remained composed. His first boundary came against Ajaz, but he kept his aggression in check. At one point, though, he attempted to break free by going down the track against Glenn Phillips, only to miscue it. Mark Chapman seemed poised to take the catch but ended up dropping it, with Gill on 45.

Gill then calmly reached his half-century, his 7th in Tests and his first significant score since the Chennai Test against Bangladesh. Once Pant was dismissed for 60, Gill would ensure that India got to Lunch without any damage at 195 for 5.

The star batter would restart after the break a bit tentatively and saw off a dangerous Ajaz Patel over. Gill would also survive a run-out scare in the next Ajaz over as he went for a quick single. The star batter started to lose partners at the other end as Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan went quickly after the lunch break.

Gill would switch gears at this point a bit and hit 2 boundaries off Phillips to race into the 80s. However, he remained resolute in defence when it was needed as the ball was doing some mischief off the Wankhede track.

While he would remain patient and try to play out Ajaz, the left-arm spinner would have the last laugh and dismissed the star batter as Daryl Mitchell took a good catch at slips. Gill scored 90 off 146 balls with 7 boundaries and a six to his name.
