In Short

  • Virat Kohli wastes no time, starts training in nets at Chepauk
  • Kohli manages only scores of six and 17 in 1st Test vs Bangladesh
  • He will be eager to score runs in the 2nd Test in Kanpur

Virat Kohli was spotted training hard in the nets in Chepauk during the 1st Test between India and Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. On Day 3 of the Test match, Kohli chose to waste no time and returned to training. During India's 3rd innings, when Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were batting, rather than sitting in the dressing room, Kohli opted for practising in the nets. Not just Kohli, as he was also accompanied by Yashasvi Jaiswal for batting practice. The hunger for runs was evident as Kohli didn't have the best of outings in the 1st Test match against Bangladesh.

On Day 2 of the Test, Kohli was dismissed for the 20th time against spin since 2021. The right-handed batter missed a straight delivery while trying to work the ball towards the on-side and was adjudged lbw. However, replays showed that Kohli had edged the ball onto his pads but didn't opt for DRS. Umpire Richard Kettleborough, standing at square leg, gave a sheepish smile after watching the replay on the big screen. However, Virat Kohli was looking in good touch after falling early in the first innings of the game. Kohli had scored 17 runs off 37 balls and also crossed the 12,000-run milestone for India in home conditions.

Kohli's forgetful outing in 1st Test

In the first innings, Kohli departed after scoring just six runs as he was dismissed by Bangladesh pacer Hasan Mahmud, who went on to pick a five-wicket haul later on. He yet again tried to chase an outside off-stump delivery and edged it only to be caught by the wicketkeeper.

Kohli's Test record has been worrisome since 2021 as he featured in 14 Tests in Asia and scored 654 runs from 23 innings at an average of 29.72 with a hundred and two fifties. There has been a significant dip in his numbers since 2021 in the longest format of the game, as the star batter managed to accumulate just 1669 runs in 51 innings at an average of 32.72 with eight half-centuries and two hundreds.

Kohli will be eager to improve his dipping numbers with India having an all-important series coming up against New Zealand and Australia where his experience will be desperately needed by the team.
