Oxford City crush Willand Rovers 6-0 in FA Cup as upset dreams fade fast

Tough day for Willand Rovers in the FA Cup! See how Oxford City ran riot

Willand Rovers manager David Steele had warned it would be a tough game for his team in the FA Cup at Oxford City – and so it proved when they lost 6-0.

For Willand of Division One South of the Southern League to get a win at the National League North side would have been a shock indeed, but on a day when Willand’s division-mates Bishops Cleeve – who beat 2-0 in the FA Trophy the previous weekend – beat torquay -united-fc>Torquay United of the National South 3-0, there was, indeed, no shock in Oxford.

“We have been given the runaround, ” said Steele. “You can get hammered but still be tight and lose one-nil or two-nil, but to get hammered and lose six-nil, it is embarrassing from a players’ perspective and a managers’ perspective.

“It was fun while it lasted but from three o’clock to five o’clock it has been an absolute nightmare. Conceding after 10 seconds distinguished any hope of an upset here today. ” It was Oxford’s Zac McEachran who scored that early, early goal and Louis Walsh got a second in the 12th minute. Walsh made it 3-0 in the 32nd minute before completing his hat-trick two minutes into the second half. Lewis Coyle made it five in the 64th minute with Walsh getting his fourth goal in the 82nd minute.

Steele said: “They have got to learn from it and I have asked them to think about how individually they can. It’s a wasted opportunity if you don’t learn from it.

“We now need to go into 39 league games and give a good account of ourselves because that’s what the bread and butter is. ” The first of those 39 league games is at home against Cribbs on Saturday. Tiverton Town enjoyed their first win of the Southern Premier South season last Tuesday when they beat Frome Town 2-1 away. Without a game at the weekend, they are at home against Winchester City this Saturday.
