Shock as Rúben Amorim contacts radio phone-in – Manchester United’s new manager wanted to take part
by Sean Lunt · Sport WitnessRúben Amorim has left a radio station in Portugal in shock as he phoned in to take part in a show, ahead of joining Manchester United.
O Jogo cover the story, explaining that the Portuguese coach, who is set to leave Sporting for Portugal in the coming days, phoned in to propose “A Minha Casinha” (My Little House) as his goodbye song. Rádio Renascença had been asking people to phone in and suggest songs which would suit the farewell.
He phoned in to speak with hosts Ana Galvão, Joana Marques and Inês Lopes Gonçalves, sending them a message to propose “A Minha Casinha”, by Xutos e Pontapés. This is the ‘soundtrack’ to his farewell as he heads to Manchester United.
This morning’s programme included a challenge to listeners to find a song that would ‘match’ well with Amorim’s departure to the Premier League. In other words, songs to send him off to.
What the hosts hadn’t anticipated was that the new Manchester United manager would phone in himself and provide his own suggestion.
“Hello, Joana. Hello, Inês. And a special hello to Ana [sporting player], because the other two are very happy to have me leave,” he is quoted as saying on the message he sent it.
“A hello, too, to all the Renascença listeners and thank you very much for your suggestions, so that I can be happier in our country. But I would also like to leave my suggestion, the song ‘A Minha Casinha’, by Xutos e Pontapés, because I think I will have it.
“I will really miss this. It’s a song that fits well with the match. That said, ‘thank you very much, see you soon’.”
The moment has gone down well, with it very much tongue in cheek and another demonstration of the affection that Amorim seemingly has for Sporting and the fan base.
He’ll now be hoping to build a similar rapport with the Manchester United supporters, although we’ll leave it up to someone else to decide what song he could choose.
