“Overestimated himself” – Insistence player made wrong decision when leaving Burnley

Wout Weghorst finally left Burnley in the summer to join Ajax on a permanent deal. While it is a big move for the striker, and was absolutely what he wanted, things haven’t quite gone to plan.

He hasn’t been a regular for Francesco Farioli’s side, and there’s the very real prospect that won’t change much.

Due to those doubts, there are now claims from the Dutch media that Weghorst should never have joined Ajax from Burnley in the first place. There is a belief he should have opted for FC Twente, who are also playing in the Europa League this season.

Journalist Johan Derksen spoke to Vandaag Inside, as relayed by SoccerNews.nl and said: “He’s just a hitter. Weghorst should have just gone to Twente.”

There is also this accusation from Derksen that the signing from Burnley thinks too highly of himself sometimes.

“Then he would have played (at Twente) and that’s in his own environment. Weghorst has always overestimated himself a bit.”

A similar sentiment is conveyed by journalist Rene van der Gijp, who suggests that the Dutchman should have joined a club where he could play regularly.

“It’s no fun when you’re young and you’re sitting on the bench, but for a veteran like him, that’s really no fun. 

“At a young age, you sometimes have coaches who don’t dare, then you’d better go play football somewhere else. But at Weghorst’s age, you have to make a choice where you always play.”

Weghorst was expected to sign for FC Twente before Euro 2024, but then he did well for the Netherlands and the Ajax opportunity opened up. He seems happy enough, and probably knows his own choices better than the talking heads in the Dutch media.
