“This will bite you” – Ange Postecoglou warned after Tottenham comments, could come back painfully

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been warned to keep quiet moving forwards, with his comments about winning titles putting unnecessary pressure on him and his team this season.

That’s according to journalist Tobias Hellgrens on Fotboll Skanalen, who believes the Tottenham manager needs to keep his cards closer to his chest moving forwards.

Postecoglou reacted angrily to questions earlier this season about Tottenham’s ambitions and where they are currently at in the development process under him.

He suggested that he could guarantee success and always won trophies in his second season after winning titles with Yokohama F. Marinos and Celtic as well as an AFC Asian Cup with Australia in 2015.

The comments did not have the effect he might have wanted as many have questioned why he would make such a statement given Tottenham are far from the finished product.

Fans and pundits alike are now expecting him to live up to those comments and give Tottenham their first trophy since their League Cup win in 2008.

Hellgrens can’t see that happening, though, and has urged Postecoglou to learn and keep his thoughts to himself moving forwards.

“I love you, Ange. This will bite you in the rear,” he said.

“I find it difficult to understand Ange Postecoglou’s strange out-of-nowhere action recently. Where did it come from? Because so be it. But before that, he has coached domestic giants in Scotland, Japan and Australia at club team level – now he coaches Tottenham.

“And nothing in Spurs’ summer window smacks of a title right away. You smell even less of a title if you sniff the team’s season opener. So, what the hell. What was that statement good for? All it did was raise the bar, putting unnecessary pressure on himself and his squad in the ultra-competitive environment that prevails in the PL’s top tier.

“There is a big chance that Postecoglou will have to eat his words at the end of the season as the results look right now.

“Right now, Tottenham are not in a position to challenge for the title. The medial “calm” it brings should be embraced instead of mopping up against the currently much better equipped rival in North London and all other competitors. Don’t cough unnecessarily, Ange. It will just bite you in the ass. If nothing else lead to more – unnecessary – pressure.”
